Aldeburgh - Suffolk

Situated on the coast of Suffolk, Aldeburgh is a quaint old fishing town. The beach is divided into three easily distinguishable areas.

The ‘Dirty Wall’ is on the south side of the town and stretches from the marina on the river Alde through to the deep water of Orfordness. The shoreline is entirely shingle, and the beach drops steeply into 20ft plus water. The fishing here can produce quite large fish, frequently Cod up to 20 pounds and Bass in double figures are reported. Normally during spells of calm weather and when other species are hard to come by, this area will produce numerous flatfish, with Dabs being prolific throughout most months.
The Second area is the town beach. This is where the commercial fishermen keep their boats and therefore requires careful selection before commencing to fish. This is especially true when night fishing, as the boats tend to leave early in the morning. The water here is still fairly deep and the species vary from cod, whiting & bass to dabs flounder and in particular sole. There are frequently small dogfish and the occasional Tope during the summer months.

Finally a 2.25km area of beach stretches North from the town to Thorpeness. This area is particularly good for whiting fishing during September & October and also for Flatfish during the summer months.

The entire beach from North to South is shingle and extends for 5km. Good sport is on offer throughout the year.

IMPORTANT

Please take care of the beach and surroundings of this pretty town, the area has lots of beautiful nesting areas for endangered specie of birds, there is enough room for all of us to enjoy our sport without disturbing others. Please do not park on common land.

 Useful Information

As the water here is so deep you can expect good size codling and whiting on cold over night sessions, also during the spring many good bass and dogfish are to be taken
Favoured methods are the two or three hook flapper, normally with at least one hook in the ‘down’ position. However just recently I have personally had success using the wishbone method.

Best baits are Lug, Mackerel, Squid and Razorfish, with Ragworm doing well especially during the summer the months.

From the A12 between Farnham and Saxmundham, Suffolk take the A1094 to Aldeburgh, Thorpeness is signed along this road.

There is no tackle shop in the town, closest is Saxmundham Angling Centre.

Aldeburgh is a quiet seaside town with lots of useful shops and services including hotels, takeaways, pubs and car parks, but it is very very very busy in the summer.
